Brainwaves on O

12 participants were asked to
bring themselves to orgasm while having their brainwaves represented by four
circles. Using the OpenBCI EEG system (Ganglion) and MaxMSP, red and yellow
circles were programmed to increase and decrease circle size based on the
frequencies and amplitudes of the participant’s brainwaves.

The pulsating circles were recorded using screen capture software and
assembled into a grid. The installation is composed of this projected video
grid and a live brainwave orgasm performance. The intended space for the
installation is a sex-positive gallery or social space such as a sex club. The
live feed could be performed by one individual or could be an open seat to
willing participants. Either scenario is open to the participation of numerous
individuals in the stimulation and projection of the orgasm.

This two-channel video and performance installation is intended to
provide accessible information about orgasm. With the help of non-invasive
visual communication, it is hoped that there will be a normalization and
celebration of sexual experience within the viewers psyche.

The following video is the installation trial. The right screen is the compilation of the participants’ waves and the left screen is a live feed. The sound is programmed to react to the live brainwaves.

This is the compilation of the 12 orgasms.

I’m more than happy to hear feedback, feedforward and collaboration ideas. Please feel free to approach me with the contact information on my homepage.

Specially thanks to Brendan Lehman for direction in neuroscience and eeg hardware and Bentley Jarvis for MaxMSP support.
